A hot mess of a post

on March 26, 2013

Friends. It has been an exhausting and stressful couple of weeks. Without going in to too much depressing details, my neice’s health status has been a yo-yo, she has been in and out of the hopsital a dozen times, and the bottom line at the moment is she is just not getting better. The next steps for her are really scary.

On the same day that my niece went back into the hospital last week, my grandmother fell, broke her hip and needed surgery. And then to top it all off my little brother is struggling with his anxiety and a med change.

Really universe? My family could really use some good news this week.

With all that going on, added into annual review season marching on, my body and brain have been a hot mess. I have a ton of ideas for blog posts — you know, good ones, that actually have substance, lol? But my brain just can’t think that deep right now. I’m trying not to sit in the proverbial “worry rocking chair” but it’s really hard. Especially when there is very little that I can do. I don’t talk much about my spirtual side on the blog, but I keep telling myself to have faith.

But today I wanted to take note of some good things and interesting discoveries I’ve made over the last couple of days —

  • I ate avacado on my salad for lunch today. If you know anything about me food-wise, you know that was a huge deal. And you know what, I really liked it 🙂 (and I think cut avacados are pretty — does that make me weird?)
  • I am figuring out how to “doctor” my plain greek yogurt so that it’s pretty darm yummy. This week I’ve been trying to cup back on added sugar. And I love my flavored Chobani, but they do tend to have a lot of sugar in there. I’ve been adding raspberry preserves, raspberry extract, and a pinch of truvia … and I’m actually really starting to like it — next up, lemon curd! Fiona also LOVES her Chobani, and even knows that the container looks like 🙂

  • I had a really good run yesterday. It was amazing. No leg pain, was able to disappear into my head, and ran 3.5 miles without even thinking about it!
  • I dropped my iPhone into Fiona’s water bowl last week — dont ask me how that happened — too much multasking at once! but hey, my gigantic case is ACTUALLY water resistant (thank you iphone gods)
  • We are cooking for Easter for my parents – we figured that would take some of the stress off of them. What in the heck does one cook for Easter? Other than ham that is!
  • I tried to make my own granola (going along with the added sugar thing!) … um, I may have overcooked it just a tad lot! But I will not be beaten! I WILL try again!
  • 3 more days to spring break. I can survive just about anything for 3 days. I need to re-charge! Right now I’m feeling blessed that I still have spring break!
  • Staying off the scale has been really good for my mental health

Well, was that enough randomness for you? Let’s just call it a brain dump! Current positives: weekend was a lot of fun – even took Fiona on a 2 mile walk – a tired puppy is a happy mom :), the sun is out today, and yesterday, one of the parents of a student I see sent me a card (through snail mail!). The front says, “You. Are. Awesome” and I’m keeping it on my desk to get me through the week 🙂

Hope your week is off to a great start. Thanks for listening to my rambling today 🙂

  1. gosh I am so sorry about all the family stuff. news like that is never easy, especially when a lot of it is health related and just out of your control. I am that person who always wants to fix things or know the answer, in these cases you just have to sit back and do what you can. Hang in there! three days is nothing.

  2. So sorry to hear your family is going through so much stress. 😦 It sounds like you’re coping well and keeping a positive attitude which is so helpful – it makes the difficult times that much more bearable. I’m glad you’ll have a chance to relax soon for Spring Break. Hang in there!!

ps the pic of Fiona is adorable! )

Leave me some love!
