Christmas Craftiness (aka better late than never!!!)

on December 5, 2012

I would just like to point out that I am currently wearing a 3/4 sleeve sweater on December 5!! Today is supposed to be another 55 degree day! I know I should be worried/alarmed about global warming or whatever, butI hate the cold and am just LOVING this weather! #pleasedontgetcold!

Moving on… you may remember that I briefly showed pictures of the advent calendar that I was working on… I found the idea on pinterest when I was looking for Thanksgiving ideas and I’ve been obsessed with the idea of having an adevent calendar. I always had one growing up ( the kind where you move santa every day) and I had missed it. I was really excited about this idea, because A: I could make it, B: I could coerce P into doing it with me and C: it included activities that we would do together each day to celebrate the season! #perfect!

So, we finally finished it on Sunday — not too shabby!

Isn't it awesome!!

Isn’t it awesome!!

P made all the measurements to make sure that everything would fit, and we made templates for the smaller pockets. Each pocket is made out of different scrapbook papers and fun Christmas-y things to decorate each one. We made all the pockets and then “glued” them on to the thicker brown poster board once they were all finished. We found that using double sided tape worked the best, unless the pocket had a “3-D” type embellishment, which were heavier; we used glue for those.  Attaching the ribbon proved to be a little difficult, but superglue came to the rescue!!

We made the activity cards for each day out of cardstock, and I wrote different activities on each one. I did most of them, but P did help me. We did choose some that needed to be more “weekend-type” activities, so we made sure that these went into a saturday or a sunday. We mixed the rest of them up and popped them into the pockets. You’ll notice that 22-25 are bigger – so we kinda know what those day’s activities are (although, I can only remember #25 at the moment!!) We decided to includ Christmas day, so that we could make sure that we had time that was just for us. We tend to be the ones that are traveling all around on Christmas Day, and we wanted to make sure that we had some “couple time” to celebrate the day. I also love that this advent calendar is creating a new tradition for us as well 🙂

We included activities such as:

  • Pick out the perfect Christmas tree
  • Deck the Halls
  • Drive around and look at Christmas lights
  • Perform a random act of kindness
  • Bake christmas cookies
  • drink hot chocolate together
  • perform a random act of kindness
  • get holiday drinks from Starbucks
  • go out for a Christmas cocktail
  • Go out for dessert
  • pick a charity and donate
  • wrap gifts together
  • buy a gift for Fiona
  • Go to the Lights in the Park display
  • Make a gingerbread house
  • take a walk together
  • Tell each other 5 things you love about one another
  • have a romantic candelit dinner by the Christmas tree
  • Have a drink together on Christmas Eve
  • We also included some silly ones like “Go back to #7 and do it again” and “Go out for dessert #2”

I am so pleased how the whole thing turned out, and making it together became its own memory in itself!! It’s been really exciting and fun to pull the cards everyday/night together. Last night we pulled “go driving and look at Christmas lights” . So after dinner we rounded up Fiona, and took a family trip around some neighborhoods to admire people’s light displays. There is one street sorta near us, where the houses go ALL out (Think Chevy Chase in Christmas vacation — best movie EVER) — so we definitely made it a point to head down that street! I was a little worried that a lot of houses wouldn’t be decorated yet, but we definitely found some 🙂 It was fun, easy nighttime activity. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t excited about pulling out today’s card! (we meant to do it this morning, but we forgot!)

** I have a picture of one of the houses, but uploading pictures has been a pain in the butt — I’ll have to add it later**

Have a great Wednesday friends — halfway through the week 🙂
